Chris Figueroa to Join Texas State Staff

Jun. 29, 2010

SAN MARCOS, TX - Chris Figueroa, a fixture in the high school lacrosse coaching community in Texas, has been named the new Associate Head Coach of the Men’s Club Lacrosse team at Texas State. Figueroa becomes the second associate head coach in program history, replacing Kyle Saunders, who has accepted a coaching position at the Westlake Middle School lacrosse program in Austin, TX.

"We are thrilled to announce the addition of Coach Figueroa to our program at Texas State. Chris is one of the most dedicated coaches in the state of Texas. His track record for improving programs, working with young people, and his outstanding knowledge of the game makes him a perfect fit to join our staff," said Chris Park, head coach at Texas State.

Coach Figueroa joins Texas State after leading St. Stephen’s Episcopal School in Austin, Texas, as the head coach for the past eight seasons. While the head coach, Figueroa led the program to their first district championship, their first trip to the Texas State Playoffs, along with making them a contender in Central District Division 1. Figueroa also runs 512 Lacrosse, which is primarily focused on hosting fall and summer lacrosse leagues for youth and high school players in the Austin area. Coach Figueroa played his college lacrosse at Texas A&M from 1999 to 2002 and his high school ball at James Bowie High School in Austin, Texas from 1995 to 1996.

"I’m really excited about the opportunity to coach at Texas State University. Making the jump from the high school game to the college game is exciting and I am anxious to get out there and start working with the team. I know a lot of the guys and I look forward to coaching with my former teammate Chris Park. He’s done a great job turning the program around and putting the Bobcats on the map."

Kyle Saunders moves on from Texas State to become a coach in the Westlake Youth Lacrosse program and to pursue new business opportunities as a sales representative for StickStar Lacrosse. Saunders plans to stay involved with Texas State lacrosse by volunteering available time to assist with the program.

"Coaching at Texas State has been a tremendous and rewarding experience. I am fortunate to have been a part of this program's growth and our first Lone Star Alliance Conference Championship. I am forever thankful to Coach Park for allowing me the opportunity to begin my coaching career in the MCLA," said Kyle Saunders. "I am also very excited to coach in Westlake's youth program this coming season. Top to bottom, they have one of the best organizations in the state, and I look forward to helping develop quality youth players in Central Texas."

"Coach K has been a tremendous asset to Texas State Lacrosse from his time as an All Conference player to leading this team as a coach. Kyle will be missed but will be remembered for what he helped accomplish during his tenure at Texas State. I, the players, and our alumni thank Coach K for his service and wish him the best in his new venture," said Coach Park.

Texas State will open fall camp the first week of September.
